Half Term headlines

Posted 18/10/2016

First and foremost, a massive thank you to all of our Y3/4 parents and family who came to support the children at our Open Afternoon.  With working parents in our Teaching Team, we do appreciate just how busy it can be to juggle work and home life and we are always so grateful for your continuing support as it means so much to the children.  As you could see, they have been beavering away on their T-shirts, learning all about how to make joins using stitching as well as learning the importance of persevering and practice.

The last two themes are also integral to our metacognition focus and we will continue to help them learn to be learners and develop a wider range of learning strategies as the year progresses.  As a school, we are hoping to organise time for parents to join us for a metacognition session so that you can also get a feel for how it works and we will advertise this date as soon as details have been finalised.  Hopefully, we will try to squeeze it into this half term but, if the build up to Christmas is as busy as usual, this may be in the New Year.  If you have any questions about this new approach in school, then our Parent/ Teacher Conferences scheduled for 31st October and 1st November would be a good time to ask.  REMEMBER, if you can't make these dates or feel that 15 minutes will not be long enough for what you need to discuss, please approach your class teacher to organise an alternative date and time.

This week is our Rising Stars Progress Test week, so we have had to juggle lessons around this.  Nevertheless, we have still managed to squeeze in some consolidation of the half term's maths coverage and will be rounding off our English with a look at persuasive language by writing holiday brochures.

NEW THEME:  Tribal Tails

Our theme starting in January is brand new to us and we are really looking forward to it.  It is a History theme starting in pre-historic times and bringing us right up to the Iron Age.  (The new Medium Term Plan for the theme will be published soon on this web page.)  We will be learning about henges, the Stone, Bronze and Iron Ages and take some time to compare the lives of people in each.  Following on from the digestive system, in Science we will learn about the skeleton and the major bones of the human body while, in Art, we will make our own cave art and take archaeological inspiration from the Beaker People to inspire our clay work.

As I type, we are contemplating quite an ambitious DT project so I am putting out an appeal to anyone with contacts in the building trade who might be able to help us talk through our ideas or help us with materials OR if you know anyone who can weave willow.  If you do, please see your class teacher  or go straight to Mrs Bradnam.  Please don't be shy; in house, we refer to ourselves as The Y3/4 Dream Team so come and help us build those dreams.
